What is Kabbalah?
Hebrew for "received tradition," Kabbalah (Ka-ba-LAH) refers to the study of ancient texts, most notably the Zohar, a 13th-century commentary on the Torah (The Five Books of Moses). Kabbalah holds that God is made up of 10 "emanations," which include compassion, strength, wisdom and grace. By studying them, humans can get closer to an unknowable God. Mainstream Judaism studies the writings of the Torah; Kabbalah looks for more mystical meaning in the written words.
The Kabbalistic study of the structure of the universe gives a person a clear idea of the Creator, whose properties are at the very top of the spiritual ladder, and of himself who is at the bottom of this ladder. The rungs of the ladder represent the various worlds. The purpose of creation is to independently ascend and merge one’s desires with those of the Creator.
This ascent involves an inner change of the person’s properties from an egotistical intention in all of his thoughts and desires to an altruistic intention. Man ascends the rungs of the ladder, each one characterizing a degree of similarity to the Creator. Some tools include studying the Zohar and, for some scholars, numerology. For instance, the letters in ha-Teva, Hebrew for "nature," have the same numeric value as the letters of Elohim, one of the names of God, leading many Kabbalists to claim that the Divine presence is found in the natural world. The Kabbalah is also the science of numbers. The Kabbalah expresses the mathematics of all creation.
Kabbalah Tree of Life
Kabbalah utilizes a primary symbol called the Tree of Life, which illustrates the organizing principle found in every mystical tradition. The Tree of Life, as one of the two primary trees in the Garden of Eden, is one of the roots of all human understanding. To understand the Tree of Life is to understand the basic formula of existence. The Tree of Life is the foundation of countless ancient cultures. It is Yggdrasil of the Nordics, the Tree of Life of the Aztecs and Mayans, and the Bodhi Tree of the Buddha.
