Inspired by the Vedic tradition, the Om symbol represents the sacred sound of creation. In Sanskrit, this mystic Om symbol represents Brahman. Om is described in the sacred texts of Hinduism as the sound that creates and sustains the cosmos. It is thought that by repeating this sound (A, U, M), the whole world - past, present and future - are encapsulated. Not only does this Om sound represent the three Gods who control life (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) in Hinduism, but these syllables also represent the three states of dreaming, sleeping and waking and represent the three capacities of desire, knowledge and action. Om is used as a mantra in meditation as well as in sacred ceremony.
